Heijunka

Level the mix of a line, a pick area or a packing station the way Rother and Shook and Art Smalley describe it. Enter the time the line has and what each product needs, and see the takt, the pitch, the load and the EPEI, the day's sequence in a heijunka box with clock times, and what levelling costs in changeovers and saves in finished stock and in uneven hours. The box prints on A4 for the line.

1 · The line and its time

Available time per day = shifts × (shift length − planned breaks). The batch interval is how often each product runs in today's schedule: 5 means once a week.

2 · Products and families

Demand for the same period as the working days. Cycle time per unit at this line, in seconds; the pack-out is the units in one container (a tote, a case, a pallet); the changeover is the time to change over to this product. To shorten it, use SMED Changeover.
