How ATS software reads a CV

Most large employers first let software sort the applications. It looks for plain text, standard headings and the words of the job ad.

  • One column. Columns, tables and text boxes can be read in the wrong order. Here everything runs top to bottom.
  • Standard headings. “Work experience” is found; “My journey” may not be.
  • The ad's own words. If the ad says “Opera PMS”, write “Opera PMS”, not only “hotel software”.
  • PDF or Word? Send what the portal asks for. When in doubt, Word is the safest for software; PDF keeps the layout for people.
  • Two versions. Use this CV for portals and the designed one from the CV Builder when you send it to a person.
