Kanban Sizing

Work out how many kanban cards each loop of your supermarket or two-bin system needs, from the demand per day, the replenishment lead time and the container quantity, with Toyota's safety factor or a statistical safety stock. See the cards to add or take out, the most each loop can hold and what it is worth, and print the cards eight to an A4 sheet.

1 · The loop

Replenishment lead time L = order interval + lead time. The order interval is how long an empty container's card waits before it is collected or ordered (the milk run, the daily order); the lead time is how long until the full container is back at its place (picking, transport, the supplier or the source process). Both in working days, like the demand.

2 · Method

Defaults: Toyota's formula with α = 10%, and a 95% service level for the statistical method. Both are policy choices, not rules: check them against your own stock-outs and your supplier's reliability.

3 · The loops

No loops yet. Add the first one above, or .
